How to Download Instagram Reels and Stories in HD

Instagram makes it easy to watch Reels and Stories, but saving them to your device is another story entirely. The app doesn't offer a native download button for other people's content. This guide covers everything you need to know about downloading Instagram media in full quality, from copying the right link to saving the file on your phone or computer.

Reels vs. Stories: Understanding the Difference

Before we get into the how-to, it helps to understand what you are working with. Instagram Reels are short-form videos (up to 90 seconds) that live permanently on a creator's profile and in the Reels tab. They are similar to TikTok videos and are designed for discovery — Instagram actively recommends them to users who don't follow the creator.

Stories, on the other hand, are ephemeral. They disappear after 24 hours unless the creator saves them as a Highlight. Stories can be photos, videos, polls, quizzes, or a mix of media. Because they expire, there is an urgency to saving them if you want to keep one. If a creator has added a Story to their Highlights, it becomes permanently accessible and can be downloaded at any time.

How to Copy an Instagram Link

The first step for any download is getting the link. The process differs slightly depending on the content type:

For Reels

Open the Reel and tap the three-dot menu icon (usually in the bottom-right corner or next to the creator's name). Select “Copy Link” or “Share to...” and then “Copy Link.” On desktop, right-click the Reel page URL in your browser's address bar and copy it.

For Stories

While viewing a Story, tap the three-dot menu at the bottom-right and select “Copy Link.” Note that this option is only available for public accounts. If the account is private, you will need to be a follower and the link may not work with third-party tools.

Downloading with RocketCat

Once you have the link, the download process is straightforward with RocketCat's Instagram Downloader:

  1. Navigate to rocketcat.app/instagram-downloader in your browser.
  2. Paste the Instagram link you copied into the input field.
  3. RocketCat will fetch the media and display available download options, including the video resolution and a thumbnail preview.
  4. Tap the download button to save the file to your device. Videos are saved as MP4 files.

No Instagram login is required. RocketCat works by accessing publicly available media, so there is no need to share your credentials with any third-party service.

Video Quality: What to Expect

Instagram Reels are typically served in 1080 x 1920 resolution (Full HD, vertical format). This is the highest quality Instagram makes available, and it is the quality RocketCat delivers when it is available from the source.

Stories have a similar resolution, though the actual quality can vary depending on what the creator uploaded. Instagram does compress media on upload, so the downloaded file may not be pixel-for-pixel identical to the original file on the creator's phone. However, it will be the best quality that Instagram's servers provide, which is more than sufficient for viewing and personal archiving.

Photo stories are saved as JPEG or PNG files, depending on the source. Carousel posts (multiple images or videos in a single post) can be downloaded one slide at a time.

Public vs. Private Accounts

This is an important distinction. RocketCat and similar tools can only access content from public Instagram accounts. If an account is set to private, the media is behind an authentication wall that third-party tools cannot and should not bypass.

If you want to save content from a private account that you follow, your options are limited to Instagram's own save feature (which bookmarks content within the app but does not download it to your device) or screen recording. Screen recording captures exactly what is on your display, but at screen resolution and with potential quality loss from compression.

Saving on iPhone and Android

On iPhone, downloaded videos land in the Files app under the Downloads folder. To move the video to your Camera Roll, open the file in Files, tap the share icon, and select “Save Video.” Some browsers, like Chrome on iOS, may prompt you to choose a save location before downloading.

On Android, downloads go directly to your Downloads folder and usually appear in your Gallery app automatically. If they do not, open your file manager and navigate to the Downloads directory. The file will be an MP4 that any media player can handle.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Act fast with Stories. Stories expire after 24 hours. If you see one you want to save, do it right away. Once it is gone, it is gone — unless the creator adds it to their Highlights.
  • Credit the creator. If you share a downloaded Reel anywhere, tag the original creator. This is both good etiquette and helps avoid copyright issues.
  • Use for personal purposes. Downloading Instagram content for personal viewing, inspiration, or reference is generally acceptable. Reposting it as your own is not.
  • Check multiple times. If a download does not work on the first attempt, the server may be temporarily unavailable. Wait a moment and try again.
  • Avoid login-required tools. Any tool that asks for your Instagram username and password is a red flag. Legitimate downloaders work with public links and never need your credentials.
